Endoscopy
Endoscopy is a minimally invasive method used to visually evaluate internal organs, obtain tissue biopsies and fluid samples, and retrieve foreign objects. Using specialized fiber-optic equipment, we are able to project an image from inside your pet onto a television screen. Instruments, including retrieval graspers and biopsy forceps, are fed through a channel in the scope and are then guided to an area of abnormal tissue for biopsy or a foreign object for retrieval. In most instances, no incisions are required and no pain is experienced following the procedure.
At Peak Veterinary Specialists, we are able to provide a full range of fiber-optic scoping procedures including:
- Endoscopy (esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon)
- Bronchoscopy/Bronchoalveolar Lavage (airway and lungs)
- Cystoscopy (urethra and bladder)
- Rhinoscopy (nasal passages)
- Laparoscopy (intra-abdominal examination, primarily for liver biopsy)
Anesthesia is required to perform endoscopy in dogs and cats. Although every anesthetic procedure comes with some risk, we do everything we can to anticipate and prevent any problems during anesthesia. The following items are part of the anesthetic protocol for each pet:
- Complete bloodwork is performed to evaluate organ function.
- Drug protocols are catered to your pet's size, age, and health status.
- An IV catheter is placed and IV fluids are administered during the procedure to maintain blood pressure and hydration.
- Blood pressure, oxygen level, heart function (EKG) are monitored throughout the procedure.
- A certified veterinary technician is dedicated solely to monitoring your pet during anesthesia, as well as to ensure a safe and comfortable recovery.
