When Dr. Vanessa Serratore moved to Alaska nearly a decade ago, she quickly discovered an inconvenient truth: while the Last Frontier offers an exceptional quality of life, reliable, local, and year-round access to advanced veterinary specialty care was missing from the picture.
She set out to change that.
After building a surgery department at an established veterinary practice, Dr. Serratore — a residency-trained veterinarian who focuses exclusively on small animal surgery — launched her own venture. She created Thrive Veterinary Surgical Services, LLC and offered her services in a mobile capacity, traveling to clinics across the state to bring advanced surgery options to more people.
As demand grew and traveling became a constraint, Thrive moved into a brick-and-mortar practice located against the backdrop of the majestic mountains in Palmer.

Dr. Serratore acquired a 4,800-square-foot facility — much larger than what Thrive required on its own — because she had a bigger vision. She envisioned a centralized hub where multiple veterinary specialists could establish individual practices, or simply join the Thrive team, giving pet parents and primary care veterinarians streamlined access to a high level of expertise in one convenient location.
From that vision, Peak Veterinary Specialists, LLC was born.
Dr. Serratore’s goal is not simply to build a team of experts in fields like oncology, neurology, dentistry, dermatology, and canine rehabilitation. Her mission is also to foster active collaboration, open communication, and deep connection among these professionals.
This cooperative model directly addresses another of Dr. Serratore’s passions: combating burnout, compassion fatigue, and mental health challenges within the veterinary field. By bringing independent specialists together under one roof, Peak Veterinary Specialists aims to alleviate professional isolation and build a supportive sanctuary for care providers.
